We are Victoria and John Foley. Our intention for starting this foundation is to provide clean water to people living in impoverished areas of the world.
JF Well Works Africa is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit foundation registered in the US and as an NGO in Uganda.
Please note: we are a small private operating foundation and are self-funded. We do NOT receive grants or solicit funds from the public. This website was created to share our progress.
What we do
Our work consists of drilling new hand pump water wells and rehabilitating existing broken wells. Work is completed by our team of five employees, experienced in all aspects of well drilling and community outreach. We set up and train local committees in basic hygiene, sanitation and how to manage the wells. Each committee collects a nominal fee (pennies per month) from each family which is used for future maintenance of the well. After completion of the wells, we monitor them for six months. At that time, if everything is managed correctly ownership of the well is turned over to the community.
To date we have drilled 192 new wells, serving 112,198 people (average of 584 people per well) and have also rehabilitated 104 existing broken wells serving 84,678 people (average of 814 people per well).
Where we work
In February 2018, we began working in Lira & Kole district of Northern Uganda and in December, completed construction of our new office/workshop just outside the town of Lira.
These areas have suffered through many hardships, including several droughts, famine and war. Northern Uganda is recovering from two decades of civil war, causing many people to be internally displaced. Most are woman and children. The main occupation in these rural communities are subsistence farming and petty trading with very little infrastructure and widespread poverty.
